Gobi Manchurian

One of my favourite street food is Gobi Manchuri.Take a stroll on the streets of Bangalore in the evening and you cant miss the many Chinese fast food centres present in its every nook and corner!Initially this dish was exclusively a street food but now we get it even in big restaurants and has made its way into the dinner menus at weddings replacing some of the traditional food items that were served before!
Ingredients
Cauliflower(cut into florets) = 250g
Refined flour/maida = 2tbsp
Cornflour = 2tbsp
Kashmiri red chilli powder = 1tsp
Ginger garlic paste = 2tsp
Onion(diced) = 1cup
Red bell pepper(diced) = 1/2cup
Green chillies = 3
Tomato sauce = 4tbsp
Soyasauce = 1tsp
Curry leaves =5 to 6
Oil = to deep fry
Salt to taste
Method
Wash the cauliflower florets in water with a little salt dissolved in it or they can also be soaked in water with a little vinegar in it to thoroughly clean them
Make a slightly thick batter with cornflour and refined flour dissolved in water,add a tsp of the ginger garlic paste,1/2tsp red chilli powder,salt and a pinch of soda to it
Coat the florets with the batter and then deep fry till it turns golden brown(heat the oil at high and add the florets,lower the heat so as to cook them through)
Drain and keep aside
Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan
Add 1 tsp of ginger-garlic paste and fry till light brown
Add the onions,slit green chillies and bell pepper and saute till onions turn translucent and shiny(do not brown the onions)
Add 1/2tsp red chilli powder,roughly torn curry leaves,tomato sauce and soyasauce(if you want it to be more spicier you can add chilli sauce too)
Add, 1tbsp cornflour dissolved in 1/2 cup water
Add the fried cauliflower florets and mix well
(If you would like the gobi manchurian with a little gravy,you can add some more cornflour dissolved in water)
Serve it hot immediately with the garnish of your choice,chopped spring onions,coriander leaves...

Strictlyformyfriends : I have heard, actually Chinese cuisine is laden with lot of excellent vegeterian dishes.
What we get in India and U.S is not the original Chinese cuisine.

This looks like an awesome recipe and so easy too. I will try it soon. Thank You!!
Gobi Manchurian is an Indian dish. It's not Chinese in the least, damn it!
Madhu - Thanks Madhu,I too was very happy with the nice red colour that I got,I probably think it must be because I deep fried the gobi really well for quite sometime in low fire,used Kashmiri red chilli powder and the soy and tomato sauce:)
Ricky - Thanks Ricky,I am waiting to hear from you after you have tried it:)
Anonymous - Hi Anon,that was quite a rude thing to say about damning it,wasnt it?It is one dish that are loved by thousands of people why do you want to damn it?
It is certainly not a Chinese dish in no place have i said it is a Chinese dish,but you must also keep in mind that you cant call it an Indian dish too!Our style of cooking does not invlove deep frying and then using different types of sauces soya sauce !
Thats why it is rightly referred to as an Indo Chinese dish:)
Hi Sumitha, Tried it ;) was great, my husband loves it.

Hey Sumitha,
Tried your gobi manchurian recipe and must tell you , it was awesome.I had never found a recipe as perfect as yours. Thanks a lot fo sharing this.
I can't thank you enough for this recipe...it's gob-smacking good and so easy to make! It's probably going to be my staple diet for a long time :)...Any tips on how I can make the gobi crunchier?
Mini,Sunitha and Saakshi - i am very happy that you guys loved it.Thanks for trying and letting me know!
Anon - the most important thing to keep the crispness of the gobi after deep frying them.... is to immediately prepare the sauce.If you let the gobi stay for a while after deep frying it tends to get a little soggy.Also maybe using smaller florets may help.
I am so glad you liked it and took the time to let me know!
Sumitha, can you tell me how can I make it a gravy type? I tried your recipe and its really great, now i want to try gravy type. can you please tell me?
Sunitha thanks for letting me know dear,as for getting more gravy what you can do is increase the quantity of diced onion and capsicum and the add about 1/2tbsp to 1tbsp cornflour dissolved in water towards the end,remove from heat immediately,with too much heat the sauce thickens leavung you with less gravy(this propotion remains constant,increase the quantity of the number of cups,depending on how much Gobi manchurian you are making)
Hope this helps Sunitha...
Here it is another favorite dish of mine.I used make this in the same procedure. Actually, it was Sanjeev Kapoor's recipe. After they made it a paid site I could not get any access to the recipe. I'm so glad I found your recipe. will try it for sure.
I think I will give it a try!
